Is Android Software Freedom

Richard Stallman, the GPL compiler script (which is used by many open source software) express an opinion about Android. Is it true that the software was free and independent?

He said the core part of the Android uses the Linux kernel licensed under GNU Public License (GPL). In this case, Stallman admits there is openness.

According to Stallman, Android can not be called as an alias free software free software free. This is because a lot of the code that are not released to the public.

As we quoted from TheRegister, Stallman said that Google was not released most of the Android source code. Especially starting from Android version 3 (Honeycomb).

However, another part of Android wrapped with the Apache license. This license does not require modification of the code distributed to the public, so the openness factor is limited.

Meanwhile, when compared with the unlocked smartphone operating system - such as the iPhone iOS or Windows Phone 7 - Android is much better.

"Android 3, out (core) to Linux, is not free software," he said.

However, Stallman praised Android as a big step towards mobile devices in an ethical, user-controlled and independent. "The road is still long," he added.

So, what operating system is really free? Stallman called Replicant, an implementation of Android that most source code using the GPL 2.

"Although the current Android phone is much better than Apple or Windows smartphones, still can not be called respecting your independence," he said.
